Chapter 960: Believe It or Not
Chapter 960: Believe It or Not
The power of the World Tree branches was indeed formidable, capable of forcibly suppressing the malicious thoughts of the curse. But it could only restrain them, not sever the root of the prison.
"No wonder Eve never succeeded all these years." He shook his head, his gaze falling on the girl with her eyes tightly shut, "At this rate, even if she persists for ten thousand years, a million years, it would only sustain the status quo. There's no way to break this curse's cage."
The evil dragons formed from the curse's malignant thoughts seemed to sense the presence of an intruder.
"Roar—!" They all turned, their crimson pupils fixed on Chen Huaian as they issued deep, guttural roars.
"Interesting… It's supposed to be a curse, yet it somehow birthed a sliver of self-awareness?" He tried to slash out with a wave of Sword Intent.
The nearby malicious thought was severed by a single sword, powerless to resist, but soon another wave of malignant thought surged from the cage and condensed into a new evil dragon.
Even after being slain once, they were undaunted. Instead, they surged toward Chen Huaian, attempting to devour him along with the invading force.
"Hmm…" Chen Huaian frowned.
This curse's power was actually simple for him.
After all, his power tier stood above the Canglan Realm; the Golden Dragon God's strength that troubled gods like Eve and Poseidon was not enough to faze him.
If he exerted himself fully, this curse would be easily broken.
But Sindra, who was entangled by the curse, would also die—equally wiped out by one of his blades.
Right now the curse was parasitizing Sindra's body; it couldn't be solved with brute force.
Moreover, obliterating the curse outright might alert the Golden Dragon King to his true strength, making it much harder to secretly grow stronger later.
Chen Huaian pondered for a moment, then sank his spirit inward.
"Senior Phoenix, do you have a way to resolve this?"
The Phoenix's fiery voice soon answered, "This curse… is tricky.
Its power isn't complex; it controls the child's mind with malignant thoughts.
But the one who set the curse left behind a faint soul mark.
That soul mark is hard to deal with, very difficult to erase.
However… if I team up with the Vermilion Bird, we might be able to try."
Chen Huaian: "Won't it hurt her?"
"Not necessarily, I can only say we'll be careful and target the curse itself." The Phoenix paused, "But Qingran that girl must come too, Vermilion Bird's power needs her cooperation."
Chen Huaian nodded, and his primordial spirit withdrew from Sindra's soul.
He opened his eyes and looked at Li Qingran.
"Girl, come over."
Li Qingran was nervously staring at Sindra and froze when she heard him, then hurried to his side, "What's wrong, husband?"
"I need your help." Chen Huaian briefly explained, "Vermilion Bird Senior will cooperate with you. We'll try together to see if we can clear the curse."
The little flame mark between Li Qingran's brows flickered slightly, and Vermilion Bird's voice came through: "Alright, but Little An, I told you—only a try, not guaranteed."
When Chen Huaian had been explaining, she had already been communicating with the Phoenix.
"Do your best." Chen Huaian nodded slightly, then took Li Qingran's hand and led her to Sindra.
The huge sea monster now lay quietly, eyes shut, chest rising and falling gently.
Those grotesque tentacles hung limply on the ground, looking almost pitiable.
Eve stood to one side, anxious, holding her breath as she glanced at Chen Huaian's expression from time to time.
Poseidon wore a stern face, expressionless, but the veins on the hand gripping his trident bulged—clearly, he was not calm inside either.
Chen Huaian glanced at them, saying nothing.
He reached out and pressed his hand to Sindra's forehead.
Li Qingran copied him and placed her hand on the mermaid girl's brow.
"Ready." Chen Huaian said softly.
No sooner had he spoken—
"Scree—!"
Two clear, piercing bird calls sounded at once!
Golden-red flames burst up behind Chen Huaian, coalescing into a vast phoenix apparition.
The phoenix spread its wings, plumes like burning clouds, fierce yet gentle. Wherever its light passed, even the air warmed.
Almost simultaneously, dark-golden flames erupted behind Li Qingran, and the Vermilion Bird's silhouette beat its wings and rose. Unlike the Phoenix, the Vermilion Bird's flames were violent and domineering, carrying the intent to burn everything away, but some force constrained them so they surged only in a single direction.
Phoenix.
Vermilion Bird.
One yang, one yin, one gentle, one fierce.
Their two flames interwove and merged midair into a column of alternating gold-red and dark gold light, shooting straight into Sindra's brow!
Sindra's massive body shuddered violently.
It opened its mouth and let out a low, mournful wail, but offered no struggle.
Deep within the soul.
The evil dragons formed from the curse's malignant thoughts were roaring madly.
They sensed a threat!
The instant the flame Dao Rhythms from the two sacred beasts flowed in, countless evil dragons lunged, mouths agape, trying to devour the invading force.
But when they touched the flames, it was like snow meeting fire—they silently melted, evaporated, and became nothing.
Ten heads…
A hundred heads…
The evil dragons condensed from malignant thoughts vanished in waves; the dark aura that had shrouded the space cleared at a visibly noticeable speed.
Yet when all the dragons were burned to ashes, the flames struck a barrier.
A faintly black shell-like light shield appeared, like a giant eggshell, trapping the curled-up mermaid girl at its core.
The flames scorched the black shield, sizzling.
The dark light trembled and warped but did not immediately shatter; instead countless fine runes emerged across it, each emitting an ancient, eerie aura that weakened and repelled the Phoenix and Vermilion Bird's powers layer by layer.
"Tsk!" Vermilion Bird's irritable voice exploded in both their minds, "This lousy shell! Burn the whole thing down!"
"Calm down." The Phoenix's voice remained steady, "If you go all out, that girl inside will die too."
"Then what? Just sit back and watch?"
The Phoenix ignored her, speaking to Chen Huaian: "Little An, our power is too explosive.
The curse's origin is too deep; unless we destroy the child as well, we can't break it."
Chen Huaian's brow tightened.
The Phoenix paused, then added, "But don't worry too much. Just because Vermilion Bird and I can't do it doesn't mean no one can."
"Who?"
"The Azure Dragon and the Qilin." The Phoenix said slowly, "Those two are much more tranquil than we are.
The Azure Dragon governs life force, the Qilin governs auspiciousness; both can soothe souls and purify filth.
If they were here, perhaps they could, without harming the child, gradually grind away this curse's prison."
Vermilion Bird snorted coldly and fell silent, evidently conceding the Phoenix's point.
She was a little annoyed she hadn't helped Chen Huaian and Li Qingran more.
Chen Huaian was silent for a moment, then slowly withdrew his hand.
Li Qingran followed suit, turning to him with imploring eyes, "Husband?"
Chen Huaian shook his head and faced the tense Poseidon and Eve not far off.
"The curse has been partially cleared, but the core prison remains."
He glanced at the Divine Spark fragments clenched in the two gods' hands, then said in a low voice:
"From here on, it depends on whether you two trust Chen or not."
