Chapter 21 Cleaning Up the Battlefield

Looking at the mess in front of them, both of them felt nauseous, and Lorraine took off her gas mask and started dry heaving.

"Didn't you survive in the apocalypse for quite a while? Why aren't you used to it yet?" Lorraine gagged, asking the question to satisfy her curiosity.

"I've never had the chance to see a scene like this before." Hearing Lorraine's voice, Ouyang Nian also felt a little nauseous.

"I only killed some with swords and knives before, nothing like yesterday when machine guns and cannons were firing at full power." Ouyang Nian said as he handed Lorraine a bottle of water.

Lorraine gulped down a few mouthfuls of water, exhaled, and said, "Thank you, I feel much better." Then she put on a gas mask and shoe covers, preparing to walk through this area that resembled purgatory.

"Di Ting, find a way around here. If you find any zombies, open fire and retreat. Come back when this place catches fire."

Because they had to wear gas masks, neither of them wore tactical goggles when they came down. They could only give all the instructions to Diting in advance.

Di Ting raised its leg to indicate that it had received the message, then put down the tire and sped away.

Ouyang Nian patted Luo Lin on the shoulder and said, "Don't you think Di Ting seems to have become more intelligent?"

"It must have been aided by the computing power of the ship's onboard AI. Tengu also exhibited similar behavior last night."

After this little incident, Lorraine and Ouyang Nian successfully arrived at the cannery warehouse.

"Speaking of which, why are there two excavators parked in the warehouse of this cannery?" Lorraine asked, puzzled by the scene before her.

"Who cares about him? Nobody's going to jump out and say that the excavator belongs to them and that we can't use it."

Ouyang Nian had already climbed into the driver's seat of one of the vehicles.

"Besides, both of these excavators have bulldozer blades in front of them, which will greatly speed up our work efficiency. Stop worrying and get to work," Ouyang Nian urged, looking at Luo Lin who was still standing on the ground in a daze.

"Here it comes." Lorraine climbed onto the excavator and looked at the control levers in front of her, somewhat bewildered.

"Don't worry about how the robotic arm is controlled. The two long levers control the forward and backward movement of the left and right tracks respectively. Pushing the left handle forward lowers the shovel, and pulling it back raises it."

"Put-put-put," two excavators, billowing black smoke, were dumped out of the warehouse.

Upon returning to the battlefield of the previous night, Lorraine and Ouyang Nian first pushed the severed limbs and arms on both sides toward the middle, and then the two of them side by side gathered these broken corpses toward the shore.

"Buzz," the data panel vibrated as the two approached the giant, dead zombie. However, Lorraine was surrounded by the noise of the excavator and did not notice the message that popped up on the data panel.

After two hours of effort, Lorraine and Ouyang Nian finally managed to pile all the corpses together.

"Let's go back to the ship and get the flamethrower."

Lorraine and Ouyang Nian picked up the spray gun and fuel canister from the small boat and put the whole set of equipment on Ouyang Nian.

"The recoil from that jet is pretty strong. Hold onto the tripod, don't let it spray into the air," Lorraine hurriedly reminded Ouyang Nian, who seemed eager to try it out.

"It's a small problem, leave it to me, you stay away."

Lorraine immediately ran behind Ouyang Nian, stopping only after she had gone about 20 meters away.

"I'm in position now, you can breathe fire now," Luo Lin shouted to Ouyang Nian.

With a "whoosh," as Ouyang Nian pulled the trigger, a 10-meter-long jet of flame shot out, igniting a corner of the gun with a boom. Ouyang Nian felt the relatively small recoil in his hand and began to move slowly.

As Ouyang Nian moved, the pile of remains quickly burst into flames.

Ouyang Nian ran back carrying the empty fuel tank on his back. "Phew, that was awesome! It was even more satisfying than blacksmithing."

Seeing that not a single drop of sweat had appeared on Ouyang Nian's delicate face, Luo Lin became curious and asked the question.

"Me? I have a special constitution, and besides, I've been answering questions by the stove for years, so I'm already used to high temperatures." Ouyang Nian unloaded the gas canister, tossed his hair, and answered easily.

Seeing Lorraine's somewhat envious expression, Ouyang Nian suddenly wanted to tease his captain.

"Do you also want to acquire such a powerful physique?"

"Of course I'd like to. I'm strong, physically robust, and adaptable to different environments."

"Drink some of my blood, and you'll improve your physical fitness too." Ouyang Nian's expression was exactly the same as when the wicked uncle tricked the little girl into eating candy.

"No! No! No!" Lorraine ran away frantically like a mouse whose tail had been stepped on by a cat, and in a flash she ran back to the ship.

"He's a pretty good guy. The survivors near the factory even tried to eat me when they saw me," Ouyang Nian muttered to himself, watching Luo Lin's panicked back. He then stood there waiting for Di Ting to return.

Before long, Di Ting returned to Ouyang Nian's side, but its head-turning motion clearly indicated that it was searching for Luo Lin.

"Don't bother looking, I've already scared them away," Ouyang Nian said with a wicked grin.

As soon as he finished speaking, Di Ting froze on the spot, then slowly raised its head to look at Ouyang Nian.

Ouyang Nian was shocked by what he saw in a mechanical dog.

"Well, they ran back to the boat," Ouyang Nian said, pointing to the small boat on the shore. He then looked at the raging flames and, after confirming that the entire pile of remains was ablaze, said...

"Let's go, we can go back now."

Ouyang Nian turned and left, while Di Ting followed behind him, backing away, still keeping a watchful eye on their surroundings.

Ouyang Nian returned to the ship and pointed at Di Ting, saying to Luo Lin, "This little guy froze right there after he heard you were scared away by me."

Lorin, holding Di Ting, said irritably, "How can you test someone like that?"

"Anyway, it was just the two of us on the shore. If you really wanted to take my blood, I would have turned around and run away. I guarantee you wouldn't have been able to catch me," Ouyang Nian said as he rowed the boat.

Lorraine rolled her eyes at him, ignored him, and started playing with Di Ting in her arms.

"What if my blood could really improve my physical abilities?"

"Did your tail grow on you later in life?" Lorraine declared, "I simply don't believe it."

Back on the ship, Lorraine and Ouyang Nian discussed their next move.

Lorraine opened the map and said, "This fire is burning quite fiercely and it probably won't be extinguished anytime soon. Why don't we set sail east first? We haven't seen any cranes or similar equipment along the way these past few days. The docks for loading and unloading cargo should be further east, where there should be ships."

"Anyway, there's enough fuel. You're the captain, so I'll listen to you." Ouyang Nian raised his hand to indicate that he didn't care.

Lorraine glared at Ouyang Nian and said, "Now you know I'm the captain. Go and build the M60E4 and GM6 Lynx. I want to see them before we disembark."

Seeing that Lorraine was clearly still angry, Ouyang Nian knew he was in the wrong and chose to obey and leave.

After Ouyang Nian left the driver's seat, Luo Lin teased the dog, Di Ting, at her feet and said, "Is this how you test someone? Don't you know that human nature is the most vulnerable to temptation?"
